Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I was recently hired to review a young man's conviction record to see whether a five your sentence could be modified. After researching his case, I learned that the judge incorrectly sentenced my client to consecutive terms and, after a hearing to correct an illegal sentence, had my client's sentence reduced in half.

How did you build a successful practice?

I built my practice the hard way, one client at a time. By providing close attention to each client's needs, being available by telephone even after work hours and weekends, I have developed a referral base second to none.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Confidence and experience. A lawyer that recognizes unique aspects of client's case and optimizes advantages to reach a satisfactory conclusion. Ensuring that the lawyer understands client's goals, which means listening carefully, and then focusing on achieving these goals.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

It is crucial to any lawyer's success to be well versed in each court's people and the practices. In having worked in these courts for over two decades, I can provide a wealth of information to each of my clients, thus relieving much anxiety about the unknown.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

My prior and recent experience, in addition to 20+ years as a defense attorney, but also as a sitting judge in a half dozen Johnson County Courts and my current position as a part time State Prosecutor. This breadth of experience gives me insights from all the stakeholders in a criminal case and allows me to reach outcomes much more rapidly and efficiently. This saves the client time and money and reduces their worry.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Solving complex problems, not just of the law, but involving people.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I have a small acreage in the rural part of the state on which I am building a small cabin and have a fully stocked pond. This provides a playground and fishing opportunities for children and grandchildren for many years.

Are you involved in your community?

I volunteer my legal services as an in-house counsel with Heart to Heart, International, a worldwide medical mission and pharmaceutical provider for underdeveloped countries and those stricken by natural disaster. Advise the Heart to Heart staff on matters of contracting with multinational pharmaceutical companies and human resources issues.
