Mark L. Stermitz has been litigating environmental and other cases for more than 26 years. Mark began his career as a trial attorney in his home state of Montana, but over the years has successfully represented clients in state and federal courts all over the U.S. In addition to his focus on environmental disputes and projects, Mark has tried scores of jury trials to successful verdicts in commercial, business tort and real estate cases.

Mr. Stermitz received a special award from the U.S. Attorney General for his exemplary skill as a Justice Department trial attorney.
To focus the intensity of his environmental practice, Mr. Stermitz moved from Montana to Washington, D.C. to take a position as a trial attorney with the Environment Division of the U.S. Justice Department. In that capacity, for several years he represented a wide variety of federal agencies in federal courts across the U.S. in cases involving the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, National Environmental Policy Act and other major federal environmental laws. Mr. Stermitz received a special award from the U.S. Attorney General for his exemplary skill as a Justice Department trial attorney.
In addition to litigation, Mr. Stermitz provides legal advice to individuals and companies with strategic or compliance issues in the environmental and energy fields. His experience includes service in-house, as Assistant General Counsel for the international Port of Portland, Oregon, where his responsibilities included air, water, natural resource and land use issues for the Port's busy international airport, general aviation and marine terminals. Mark's current practice includes representation of landowners and developers engaged in renewable energy projects such as wind, solar, and hydropower. His background in Clean Air Act and natural resource issues has evolved to include climate change, greenhouse gas and carbon credit issues. Mr. Stermitz served on the board of Directors of the Big Sky Carbon Sequestration Partnership, a public-private consortium engaged in the research, development and promotion of carbon dioxide capture and sequestration.
Mr. Stermitz is admitted to practice in California, Oregon and Montana. He is frequently called upon for presentations and articles on a variety of environmental topics, including Climate Change and Carbon Credits.
Mr. Stermitz and his wife Jacqueline have four grown children and live in the Los Angeles area.
