Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

When probating a will, all the decedent's next-of-kin must be notified. In this case, the decedent had no spouse or children. She and her siblings were all elderly, but all the siblings were still alive, except for one. This was not a close-knot family and the living siblings were spread throughout several states, but rumor had it that the one sibling who had died had left a grandson, who might have been adopted by a step-parent along the way. It took a lot of computer searching and telephone talking, but we finally located the grandson in California who verified that he had, in fact, been adopted. Consequently, he was no longer included as a next-of-kin.

How did you build a successful practice?

I wrote a book which was published by the American bar association, but I don't know that it brought me any clients. I don't believe there was anything specific - primarily word of mouth.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

It depends on the client - but all clients need to begin with someone who listens and asks questions to get the facts straight.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

For litigation clients, knowledge of local courts/judges is helpful. For non-litigation clients, the logistics of meeting for the first time can be an issue. I also can make house calls.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I will give 20 minutes of non-billable time so that I can first get overview of situation - then I can provide some information to the prospective client re: whether the client has enough of an issue to go forward.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

The short-hand version of the actual problem along with basic facts.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

My experience; I have been doing this for a long time and can also make house calls.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Helping client's sort through their issues, make decisions, and develop a plan of action.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Travel and reading.

Are you involved in your community?

Yes - I am on the boards of 2 non-profits and I am currently the treasurer of two more.
