About R.
Doug was born in Cleveland, Ohio and has lived in the Kansas City area since 1964. He attended the University of Kansas where he obtained a business degree in accounting. After graduating, he went to work for Arthur Young & Company, an international CPA firm, in its Chicago office. He came back to the Kansas City area to attend law school at the University of Kansas. Doug worked throughout law school at two prominent Kansas City law firms and was also the Student Director of the Legal Aid Clinic. He graduated from law school in 1984.
Doug began his career in a civil litigation defense firm and worked on a local, regional and national basis for a number of Fortune 500 companies in the defense of products liability cases. Most of his cases involved the defense of products claims involving automobiles and recreational vehicles (motorcycles, ATVs, personal watercraft), but he also spent a considerable amount of time working on cases involving Class II and Class III medical devices and prescription drugs.
After several years of doing defense work, a close friend of Doug's was severely injured in a bicycle accident. Soon after the accident occurred, it was determined that the incident had been caused by defects in the design and assembly of the bicycle. Later, Doug's friend died from his injuries and his widow asked Doug to represent her and her four children against the bicycle manufacturer. Although he was initially unable to take the case because his firm only did defense work, Doug persisted and his partners eventually relented. The bicycle company, defended by one of the largest law firms in the United States, fought relentlessly and pulled every dirty trick in the book - but eventually the truth was revealed and the case was resolved for a very substantial amount. Doug's experience with that case, along with an increased awareness of what he perceived to be improper tactics employed by products manufacturers in the defense of their products, convinced him that he could no longer work for corporate America. As a result, Doug began to transition his practice to the representation of persons who had experienced catastrophic personal losses. The transition was completed in 1995 with the formation of the Firm.
Since the formation of the Firm, Doug's practice has focused almost exclusively on the representation of plaintiffs who have suffered injuries, or whose family members have been killed, as a result of defective products. Even within the field of products liability, Doug is focused primarily on cases involving catastrophic injuries (particularly spinal cord injuries and brain damage) or death. And after nearly losing one of his children to cancer in 2003, Doug has been able to relate in a very personal way to the losses his clients suffer from life altering experiences that have to be lived through to truly understand. Doug's clients have included persons in cases involving numerous products, including the following:
Doug, an AV rated attorney, has also represented numerous clients whose lives have been changed as a result of reckless commercial truck drivers and the companies that employ them, as well as other victims of negligent drivers. His practice also includes work in national and statewide class action litigation. Doug is a frequent speaker at national seminars and conventions on the subject of child safety seat litigation and has authored numerous papers on the subject of child seat crashworthiness. Along with his partners and a stellar team of supporting attorneys, paralegals and administrative staff, Doug has recovered, through settlements and jury verdicts, over $100 million dollars for the clients of his Firm.
Our three lead trial lawyers Evan Douthit, Randy Rhodes and Doug have been involved in some remarkable cases all over the country.
Evan, Doug and Randy are particular about the cases they agree to take. They only want to represent deserving clients who have good cases and who are in need of the highest quality legal representation.
It's not always about high dollar cases. Often, it's simply about doing what is right.
For example, several years ago, a newspaper article exposed a horrific study from the 1930's in which innocent orphans were unwittingly used as human guinea pigs by researchers at the University of Iowa. Outraged by the revelation, Evan, Doug and Randy agreed to represent some of the orphans who were still alive and some of the estates of those orphans who had died. After years of litigation with the State of Iowa, justice was obtained for those orphans in the form of an apology and a high six figure settlement.
As another example, Evan, Doug and Randy represented the family of a homeless man who suffered fatal injuries when he was savagely beaten by a store clerk who erroneously believed that the homeless man stole a 99 cent bag of ice. The family of the homeless man was denied justice in the criminal trial of the store clerk, who got off with probation and a slap on the wrist. In a subsequent civil lawsuit, Evan, Doug and Randy obtained a settlement for the family, providing them some measure of justice.
Doug is formally admitted to the bars of the State of
