Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
Most recently resolved a head on collision personal injury and death matter for insurance policy limits, working with the client in connection with her father's estate matters and dealing with medical insurers and Medicare bureaucracy. Helped a neighbor resolving a very large estate matter in which she was executor and trustee. Several recent successful Social Security Disability Insurance appeal hearings.
How did you build a successful practice?
I am in my 47th year of law practice, but started this firm in 2013. I do not heavily advertise, and try to concentrate on a limited number of clients I feel I can help, rather than a large volume of legal matters. I derive most of my clients from referrals from other attorneys in the community for my area of practice, from previous client recommendations, and from friends and neighbors in the local community. I try to limit the distance within which I accept clients, so they can get to my office in Cumming, and it would not take hours to get to court.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Patience and understanding. A lawyer should be willing to listen to the client explain in their own words, communicate, and have a direct relationship with the client. Telling the client up front whether the attorney has experience in that area of concern, or suggesting another firm if more appropriate or out of the attorney's practice or geographic area. A clear up front explanation of how attorney fees work, with a clear written agreement about fees and expenses. Understanding about how communication will take place as to calls with new information or periodic reports on the status of the client's legal matter.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge of courts and people is very important, such that I sometimes associate with a local attorney in other counties or states, with the client's consent.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I listen while the caller explains what they know about the matter and ask questions to find out important details. Then I discuss legal issues that appear initially, whether there are time limits for the client to take action, explain whether this is an area in which I feel I can be helpful to them, and find out if they want to proceed further. In the first phone call, I can discuss the matter with the caller, and tell them then whether I feel that I could be helpful on that matter. I would also do a brief summary of some important other issues that they might need to consider.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
I need to find out the names of parties on both sides so I can check for legal conflicts. I need dates of events or injuries, insurers and coverage information in accident cases, employer in Workers Compensation; description of serious injuries or medical conditions in accident, Social Security and Workers Compensation matters. So it is actually preliminary intake for a potential new client, to determine whether I can be helpful for them. I only accept potential clients who I am able to see and talk with, in person or on vide0, because I want both of us to have a good feeling about setting up a new legal relationship.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I am in my 47th year of law practice, I have a small practice so I can concentrate on a few legal matters and am not a large volume firm. I provide the services and communication with the clients directly as an attorney, rather than relying on answering service or non-lawyers to provide advice. My goal is to get all called returned the same day, if not sooner, and I can communicate with clients by phone, fax, email, FaceTime, and video services like Google Duo or Zoom.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Helping clients achieve their goals, when I am able to. Meeting people and understanding their issues. In a small firm being able to select clients whom I think I can help. This includes some pro bono work as referred from local agencies.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Family and genealogy; Fishing and Fly tying; Reading (history and mystery); Porch gardening and citrus trees; Local and State government and legislation; Neighborhood and condo matters.
Are you involved in your community?
Yes. I have been a Forsyth County Planning Commissioner for District 5, 2014 - 2017; Forsyth County Citizen Stakeholder (unofficial) 2017 - present; Participate in Forsyth County Child Fatality Review Panel, 2013 to present; Vice President of Orchards of Habersham Grove Condominium Association Board; Franconia College Legacy Fund advisory committee, 2001 to present;
