About Steven
Steven C. Wolan specializes in representing public entities and private clients in civil litigation and employment practice areas such as discrimination, sexual harassment, and wrongful termination. He is also extremely experienced in police defense, premises liability and real estate litigation matters. Clients such as Alameda County choose him and his firm to handle their most contentious, complex and politically sensitive litigation.
Mr. Wolan is a Martindale-Hubbell AV Rated attorney. In his 35 years of legal experience, he has tried over 75 jury trials in state and federal courts. He has handled appeals before state and federal appellate courts.
He has also handled hundreds of mediations, arbitrations, ENEs and settlement conferences for his clients. He is a mediator and settlement commissioner for both the Alameda County Superior Court and the Bar Association of San Francisco, and he has served as Judge Pro Tempore in Alameda County.
Prior to forming Patton Wolan Boxer, the predecessor to Patton Wolan Carlise, Mr. Wolan served as a VISTA volunteer attorney and as a trial attorney for the Alameda County Public Defender's Office, one of the top defender offices in the nation. At the Public Defender's Office, he won more than half of his 50-plus criminal jury trials including half of the felony trials he was assigned. Mr. Wolan received the respect of judges and opposing counsel alike. He continues to enjoy close relationships with judges, district attorneys and public defenders from that time who have since been appointed to state and federal benches.
Mr. Wolan is admitted to practice by the State Bar of California, the United States Court of Appeals, Ninth Circuit, and the U.S. District Court, Northern and Eastern Districts of California.
Outside of Patton Wolan Carlise, Mr. Wolan is a member of the Earl Warren American Inns of Court and the Litigation Sections of both the Alameda County Bar Association and State Bar of California. He serves his community on the Board of Directors of Aurora Theater Company and on advisory boards for the Berkeley Repertory Theater, Berkeley Art Center, and the California Institute for Clinical Social Work. Mr. Wolan has been listed in Swarthmore's Who's Who, and he has participated in AIDSRIDE.
