Jay has a successful practice in debtor-creditor and bankruptcy law, serving as debtor's counsel in numerous Chapter 11 reorganizations and representing secured and unsecured creditors in numerous bankruptcy proceedings. In addition, he also handles business litigation, and has represented banks and other lending institutions, corporations, and other involving structured loan transactions in connection with work-out situations.
He has served on the panel of trustees for U.S. Bankruptcy Court from 1973 until 1985, and is a former judge at the University of Minnesota Law School Moot Court. From 1978 to 1979, he taught as an adjunct professor at Hamline Law School in the area of Bankruptcy Law.

In addition to acting as coach and referee for youth athletics, Jay officiated at football and basketball games in the Big Ten Conference for ten years.
Jay has this to say about his work:
- I believe that one of the most important steps in client representation is to establish, with the client, the client's needs and objectives at the outset of representation.
