Record-Breaking Case Against City of Phoenix

In 2013, Trysta worked alongside another attorney to obtain one of the highest jury verdicts that year in a wrongful death case against the Phoenix Police Department in Sudberry v. City of Phoenix, et al. Trysta helped represent the family of a young woman who was killed by her ex-boyfriend. The family had previously claimed that the ex-boyfriend exhibited violent, escalating behavior, jealousy, and possessiveness that led him to threaten, harass, and assault the young woman on two occasions. After Phoenix Police confirmed the ex-boyfriend made a valid death threat and Phoenix Police believed he had the intent and means to carry through with that threat, the Police Department failed to arrest him. The jury awarded $3,000,000 in damages and found the City of Phoenix 40% at fault. The matter was then appealed and the case was remanded for a second trial. During the second trial the damages award was upheld and the jury found the City of Phoenix 30% at fault.
