About Vincent

Vince Amberly is a 1979 graduate of the University of Virginia Law School. As a litigator for the past 25 years, Vince has provided litigation and business advice. In the early 1980's, Vince served as the Deputy Attorney General in charge of the Antitrust Division and the Office of Consumer Protection in the Delaware Attorney General's Office. He then worked at the Federal Trade Commission ("FTC") in the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection handling consumer fraud litigation, business opportunity and franchise enforcement. In 1987, Vince left the FTC and joined the oldest intellectual property law firm in Washington, D.C. (Mason, Fenwick & Lawrence) where he was a partner for several years. While at Mason, Fenwick, Vince handled trademark enforcement for several large national and international companies. He coordinated trademark, copyright and patent litigation in federal courts throughout the United States. During this period, Vince also argued successfully in several U.S. Courts of Appeal, including the Fourth, Fifth, Eleventh and Federal Circuits. During the past ten (10) years, Vince has provided business law services and general litigation and counseling support to a number of national, regional and local clients. While many of the firm's clients are based in the Washington, D.C. area, most clients of Amberly & Associates have business interests and/or litigation concerns throughout the United States.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

An antitrust case brought in federal court against a Virginia state board and its members against a chiropractor. The chiropractor was able to assert her position that the board had discriminated against her. I handled all of the litigation and discovery in this high profile case.

How did you build a successful practice?

By listening to clients to find out what their real needs and concerns may be, going the extra mile, being loyal to the clients, and by being honest-sometimes a client's goal may not be obtainable, and if I think that is the case, I tell the client frankly.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Someone who will listen to them and is motivated to do everything possible to meet the client's needs.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Sometimes it is very important, especially in state courts. Knowledge of the judge, at both the state and federal levels, is always important.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I can usually assess the likelihood of success, and give an approximate estimate of likely costs.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

The names of all parties involved, and as many facts as possible about the issue that needs to be addressed.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I have had many different experiences, and I am willing to explore as many options as possible to try and address a client's needs.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

The satisfaction of having clients realize a particular result after going through stages of discouragement.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I like sports, travel, and meeting new and interesting people.
