Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
In 2015, I represented an 83-year-old lady who was involved in a motor vehicle collision in Grand Traverse County with a distracted driver that was talking on her cell phone. I was able to settle my client's personal injury claim - without the need for a lawsuit --- for $250,000. In 2016, I represented a 70-year-old gentleman who was injured by a 17-year-old driver that was traveling too fast on a snow-covered road in Leelanau County. I was able to resolve his personal injury claim at mediation for $300,000. Recently, I was co-counsel in a wrongful death action that settled at mediation in a 7-figure range for a young lady who was killed in Mecosta County. The settlements for my elderly clients helped them to try and enjoy what should have been their ""golden years,"" even though both were seriously injured, and we were able to address on a long-term basis the financial needs of the family for the young lady who was killed.
How did you build a successful practice?
By putting in the time and effort that is necessary to try and succeed, and by achieving results for my clients.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Experience, honesty, and someone who takes a business-like approach to legal matters. Common sense and practical considerations can make the difference in being able to settle or having to file a lawsuit, and the ability to obtain a recovery.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Although knowledge of local matters cannot be overlooked, the ability to apply the law to a fact situation for someone who has been injured and is in need of help goes a long way in any jurisdiction.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
If there is a viable civil claim to pursue, and if the applicable time limitations allow a person to do so.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
As with any story that has to be told, the ""who, what, when, where and how"" is where we start to look when asked to help someone who has been injured.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
Focusing on people who have been hurt, and trying to help them cope with something they did not ask for, expect, nor deserve.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Being able to help someone who has been hurt to try and recover financially from those who are responsible for what happened.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Hockey, fishing, hunting, and spending time with family and friends.
Are you involved in your community?
In addition to other events and organizations, I am a member of our county's Chamber of Commerce, I am a former member of the Big Rapids Planning Commission, and for 10 years [from 2007 to 2017], I had the privilege to serve as the Mayor for the City of Big Rapids.
