Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
Earlier this year, I had a young mother come to me who had a judge grant custody to a father who had been absent for a number of years. Mom was the sole parent for 6 years and raised the child. Mom did not have an attorney at the time and the judge found her in default for lack of participation and late payment of filing fee. I filed for a new trial and won. We were heard in front of a different judge and we eventually negotiated the return of the child to her mother.
How did you build a successful practice?
I am still building my practice, but most of my clients are referrals from other clients and some attorneys.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should look for a lawyer with experience in the type of matter presented. In addition, whether the lawyer is reliable and returns calls promptly and communicates well with clients. My clients are a priority and I make sure to respond within 24 hours or less to messages. I also believe in being a compassionate advocate, caring deeply about my clients and cases.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Very! Each state has different rules of procedure. Also, it's important to know the jurisdiction and the judges. I keep a list of notes regarding judges and their preferences or ruling track record.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I provide fee/retainer information, and general advice. My fees vary depending on the type of case.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
It depends on the case, but it helps to have case numbers if the case is ongoing as well as the most current orders, summons, citations, etc.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I'm not interested in breaking my client's pocket book. I work with client's financial situations and offer payment plans. I provide one on one personal attention. Clients will not just deal with my paralegal or assistant. I am passionate and have a proven track record of success.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Helping my clients succeed and grow. However, the growth is mutual. I try to find the positive in all situations and work towards solutions. I believe there is always a solution.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Yoga, belly dancing and travel.
Are you involved in your community?
I was rape crisis counselor for 12 years in the Bay Area. Since moving to Colorado, I have volunteered in the area of animal rights with the Animal Law Center.
