Reviews

Dr.Mittan is AMAZING. I've been seeing her regularly for many years for long term health conditions and she saved my life when I nearly died of long covid. She doesn't just diagnose and throw a prescription at you like so many doctors. She prescribes as needed but also offers great advice for lifestyle changes to correct the source of health issues and is committed to coming up with a plan with the patient. She sees 3 others in my family and has been the best doctor we've ever had.
The receptionist incorrectly scheduled my appointment; I was scheduled for 9 AM but was told upon arrival that I was late for an 8 AM appointment. I schedule my appointments and write them down and put them in my phone’s calendar as soon as I make them. The receptionist then stated that she’d called me a few days prior (she hadn’t) to remind me of my appointment time. She also asked me for my insurance information, which I only had available on my phone. She tried to take a scan of my cell phone. I ended up emailing her a PDF of my insurance card. To add to the technological incompetence, they STILL, in the good Lord’s year of 2023, do not accept card payments. There is no patient portal. There is no website. I’m surprised that this location exists on online maps, even, considering their refusal to go digital. They obviously have some issues with their organization and file volume. Upon arrival, I also noticed the poor organization of the offices. The front desk area had piles upon piles of stacked up files behind the receptionist. Once I got to see Dr. Mittan, I saw even more documents piled up both on the patient bed and the doctor’s desk area. My concerns were quickly dismissed by Dr. Mittan. My PCP had done some testing and worried I had an endocrine disorder that she wanted to be treated by an endocrinologist. My PCP referred me to Dr. Mittan because endocrinologists in the area have low availability. I quickly learned why Dr. Mittan had any availability. After dismissing my concerns, and agreeing to do a test that would definitely not be ideal for my Type 1 Diabetes just to rule it out, she went into an hour-long speech to teach me about my T1D and effective treatments for it. I didn’t know what to do to pause this or to communicate to her that I have had this disease for most of my life and was aware of everything she told me. Then… the quackery started. She recommended that I try intermittent fasting, eating only during a 6-hour window each day. Sure, this may work for some, but is not something I’d like. She mentioned that I could add almond oil/butter to my coffee to hold me over after that window was over (I don’t drink coffee regularly). THEN, she mentioned that water-only fasts for a few days have “cured stage IV cancer” before. What? That’s medically not proveable, and even if there have been cases of this happening, I would have been able to find data about it. I could not. That’s absolutely ridiculous. She asked to see me again three months later. I made the appointment, but have since cancelled it. I have serious medical issues that I wanted to be tested and/or treated for and this was the care I received. I highly recommend people avoid seeing her if possible. The wait list for any other endocrinologist in this city is much more preferable than this experience was.
I’ve been going to Dr. Mittan for close to 3 years now. She’s been so helpful throughout this time as I have struggled to manage my hypothyroidism and other health issues (weight gain, hormone imbalances, etc,) that have stemmed from this. She is extremely competent and intelligent, but also very kind. Unlike other doctors I have been to, she doesn’t speak down to me or try to shove a million prescriptions down my throat. She takes the time at each appointment to THOROUGHLY explain treatment options and/or prescriptions. She also listens to my own input and concerns, and answers all of my questions (even the crazy ones that come from me anxiously Googling my symptoms????). This was extremely helpful in the beginning as I was unsure what was wrong with me and it can also be hard to find the perfect fit when treating thyroid issues- AKA the right dosage and brand of thyroid medicine. She changed her office workers not long after I started going to her, and because of this, she has been available whenever I need to call about any unusual symptoms or worries- she also made sure to monitor me every time we changed the dosage or brand before finding the right “fit”. The current front desk worker is super nice as well- she always has paperwork ready and returns calls quickly if she happens to miss one of mine. Because of her, communication has greatly improved and even if there is a mix up, I’m inclined to be patient as it’s rare and there haven’t been any rude encounters. In addition to this, Dr. Mittan has been extremely attentive with any other health problems that have stemmed from my hypothyroidism. Instead of beating around the bush or simply sympathizing with me, she was extremely honest and blunt about how these problems could become more severe, and how I needed to change certain areas in my own life to fix them. As someone else mentioned in a review from a while back, I appreciate this type of approach with my doctor. I want someone to give me the facts and not sugar coat things, because otherwise I’m unable to know the severity of the issue or I only ignore it and don’t change. She’s never been rude or mean or “judgemental” as I’m sure some people may worry about when seeking out a healthcare provider, but she will be candid and she will straight up tell you what the problem is and if you need to fix it on your own end. To wrap up my review, I would definitely recommend seeing Dr. Mittan if you need someone to treat your thyroid issues (this is my specific diagnosis- I don’t want to speak about any other health issues as I can only review from my own experience from my own health issue). It’s been so great to have a doctor who is willing to work with me and monitor my health to help me find a solution to combat these issues. Really glad someone had recommended seeing her because there were things I thought I would have to deal with for the rest of my life, but she’s helped me find answers and get to the root of my symptoms when I just accepted that I was born with those issues and had to just live with them. She also gave me information and different options to fix them or treat them so they don’t hinder my everyday life. Anyway, if you need someone to treat your thyroid in B/CS, Dr. Mittan is great and has really helped me!
EDIT: **Another reviewer here implied that I “don’t know how to follow directions.” I have a Master’s in IT and I’m a tech writer for a living, I’m fairly certain I know how to do something as basic as follow directions. My situation occurred after calling and leaving voicemails for months with no returned calls, I assure you. If the office is doing better now, it is most likely because they finally decided to shape up after the medical board investigated them per the complaint I filed. And based on the review they wrote, it sounds quite doctored and not very genuine, as if someone is trying to make the office look better. Just my two cents as someone that assesses written word for a living** I liked Dr. Mittan when I saw her but her staff is awful about returning phone calls and impossible to get a hold of. I’ve been desperately trying to find a new endocrinologist since I’ve moved out of College Station, but I need a referral, and I can’t get that because this office never answers the phone or calls me back when I leave voicemails! It is beyond frustrating trying to get treatment for my PCOS, but can’t! This office is quite literally preventing me from getting the treatment I desperately need. I basically gave up and will be contacting my old endocrinologist Dr. Crumpler instead, just so I can get a damn referral. This is ridiculous and unacceptable. I am even contemplating reporting this office to the medical board for negligence and refusal to answer. You cannot just IGNORE your patients and expect there to be no consequences.
Dr. Mittan is an excellent doctor. She is very thorough and does not rush through the appointment. She spends a great deal of time with you and explains everything in a easy-to-understand manner.
