About Joseph
Joe is devoted entirely to helping families preserve and protect their future and the futures of their children through appropriate estate planning. This includes development of Wills, Trusts, and sophisticated planning techniques for clients, as well as Trust and Estate Administration, Elder Law Planning, including Medicaid, Special Needs and Life Care Planning issues. He has helped thousands of people who are concerned about protecting their families from the devastating legal effects of disability and death. Through public and private seminars, professional continuing education seminars and numerous articles, both for other attorneys and the general public, Joe strives to inform other professionals and the public of the need to properly plan for the future. He is dedicated to helping people protect their children, their assets, provide for their loved ones and plan for life’s contingencies through proper estate planning.
He understands the concerns that both young and old have to best protect their family’s economic and personal well being. That is why every plan is hand crafted to specifically address each client’s individual concerns. His aim is to help you accomplish your estate planning goals and to take the mystery out of the planning process. During an initial consultation, you will discuss your needs and he will make recommendations as to how to best achieve your goals.
His special awareness of the need for proper estate planning for the benefit of disabled individuals first arose by virtue of his participation in the formation of The Independence Through Employment special workshop in St. Louis Missouri, of which he served as a Director and Officer. He is also a past director of the St. Louis Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the St. Louis Chapter of the American Parkinson’s Disease Association. He is also a past director of Payback, a not for profit corporation developed in association with the circuit courts of both the city and county of St. Louis. Payback seeks to raise funds for use by the juvenile courts in support of their restorative justice programs, the purposes of which are to teach juvenile offenders social responsibility to reduce recurrence of juvenile criminal offenses.
Joe has been serving clients in the Metropolitan St. Louis area and throughout the state of Missouri for more than 45 years in the practice areas of estate planning and administration, disability planning and probate avoidance planning. A graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law and St. Louis University.
Joe is the doting father of two beautiful, adult daughters, Meg and Jill. A former soccer coach, avid skier, and long distance bike rider, he prefers reading to TV viewing and is one the last holdouts to a cable or satellite TV subscription.

Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I successfully settled a case after several days of trial in which an attorney had mismanaged the administration of a trust to the detriment of my client's interests. My client was an income beneficiary for life and disputes arose between my client, the residuary beneficiaries, and the successor trustee of my client's parents' trusts..
How did you build a successful practice?
Prompt service, good client communication, good results yield client referrals
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
An attorney skilled in the area of law involved; who listens to the prospective client's recitation of his/her issue and asks probative questions; who can explain the issues involved, the applicable law, and possible outcomes, both good and not so good; wHo clearly explains the client's fee obligations ( so as not to be unpleasantly surprised later).
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Being a lifelong St. Louisian, knowledge of where potential clients went to high school always provides a touchstone for better familiarity with prospective clients. Seriously, due to the nature of my practice, local knowledge really is not that important. However, the probate court's knowledge of me is important as the court is aware of the manner in which I conduct litigation and my reputation for honesty and preparedness, and knowledge of the subject matter of cases I bring or defend.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
In my initial phone conversations, I try to determine the issues involved in a prospective client's matter; explain the legal basis of his/her issue and, in at least general terms, explain what I can do for him/her and a general outline of costs involved.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
I seek the name and contact information of the client, a general recitation of the issues the client has and a summary of the facts that constitutes the basis of his/her call.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
As an experienced, solo estate planning attorney, my depth of knowledge as to how to structure an estate plan far exceeds most general practitioners both in methods of probate court and estate taxation avoidance. Without extensive experience in the handling of trust and estate administrations, many attorneys do not know the proper questions to ask much less the best way to handle complex distribution provisions. By being in solo practice, I can provide services to clients at a substantially lower cost than larger firms with equally experienced estate planning attorneys, due to redcued overhead.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my profession is seeing the successful completion of a client's plan.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I love to ski and have recently commenced the frustrating practice of golf. I also read voraciously on a number of subjects.
Are you involved in your community?
I have consistently, throughout my career, dedicated time to worthy causes. I have served on the boards of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, The American Parkinson Disease Association, served as chairman of the stewardship committee of my parish, and presently serve on the ALumni board of Chaminade College Preparatory School.
