Please include all relevant details from your case including where, when, and who it involves. Case details that can effectively describe the legal situation while also staying concise generally receive the best responses from lawyers.

Growing up in Michigan, I always felt like I identified with the individuals who were labeled the underdog. I’ve always had a strong desire to help those in need, and defend those who may not be able to defend themselves. I also grew up with a strong interest and passion for the law, specifically because there was such a redeeming quality about a profession that worked to restore order and justice in society — essentially leveling the playing field for all of the underdogs out there.

When I decided to attend college at Michigan State University, I decided to study business and pre-law. Originally I thought that I might want to go into business for myself, but after taking a few pre-law classes, I quickly realized that going into the law profession would offer me the opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself. After graduating from Michigan State University in 2007, I was quickly accepted into the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. It was there that I learned the importance of hard work, and how a commitment to learning the law could prove to be a valuable asset that could help me better serve my community.

Finally, in 2011 I received my Juris Doctor from the Detroit Mercy School of Law and worked hard to pass the Michigan bar that same year. Armed with a license to practice law across the great state of Michigan, I originally signed on with a local firm where I could begin to pick up valuable experience as one of the firm’s leading personal injury attorneys. Over the next three years, I was able to gain extensive knowledge and experience representing clients on a variety of different injury cases. I was even offered the opportunity to litigate some high-value cases that enabled me to help my clients receive compensation that could help ease the pain and suffering they were going through.

Eventually, I decided to open my own firm so that I could personally manage my own caseload and better serve my clients with a more personalized approach. So in 2014, I opened the doors to the Michigan Advocacy Center, a firm designed to focus solely on personal injury cases. In the nine years since I started the firm, I’ve made it my mission to provide the highest level of legal counsel and representation to those who have been victimized by the negligent actions of someone else. I believe that every client deserves to have their story heard, and I fight hard to make sure my clients receive fair compensation that can help them recover from their injuries and get their life back on track. Because that’s what originally drew me to this line of work — fighting for those who may not be able to fight for themselves.

  • Jennifer Buhl v. City of Oak Park
Jennifer Buhl tripped on an uneven sidewalk and sustained injuries in 2016. In 2017 the Michigan Legislature amended the Government Tort Liability Act to allow governmental entities to assert additional defenses not available to governmental entities in the past. Jennifer Buhl filed a lawsuit against the City of Oak Park in 2017. Defendant City of Oak Park filed a motion to dismiss the matter based on the new defense of open and obvious. Jennifer's counsel argued that the amendment of the statute was not retroactive and therefore since her injury was incurred in 2016, the amended version of the statute did not apply. The trial court and the Michigan Court of Appeals agreed with the Defendant City of Oak Park that the statute was retroactive. The Michigan Supreme Court disagreed with the trial court and Court of Appeals and found that the statute was not retroactive and that Defendant City of Oak Park could not rely on open and obvious as a defense.

  • Associated Surgical Center v. State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company
A medical provider sued and insurance carrier for unpaid services related to a patient who sustained injury in an auto accident. The medical provider had obtained an assignment of rights from the patient in order to pursue its claims against the auto insurance carrier. During the pendency of the lawsuit, the auto carrier filed a motion to dismiss based on an anti-assignment clause in its auto policy. The trial court agreed with the Defendant and dismissed the case. The Court of Appeals overruled the trial court and found the anti-assignment clause to be unenforceable.
