Cases

Northrup v. State Farm

State Farm denied the case on an exclusion in the policy. The Court ruled that the occupant's policy exclusion to a relative's motorcycle violates the statutes that require underinsurance coverage and aim to ensure that victims of vehicle accidents receive adequate compensation for their injuries.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

We represented the family of an elderly woman that was knocked over and died as a result of a door closing on her at a grocery store. We immediately hired the best expert to examine the door and he determined what was wrong right away. Hiring the right experts in any case, whether it is a car accident or other injury, is critical to winning cases.

How did you build a successful practice?

Building a successful practice takes time. People have to trust your reputation and hard work. It took me 15 to years to finally be considered one of the best lawyers in the state.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Honesty and openness, whether it is advice you want to hear or not. Sometimes, I have to tell a prospective client that I don't think he/she can win the case, but at least I am always honest and upfront about it.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge is very important. Every state has different statues and laws. Minnesota is a No-Fault state and we know the ins and outs of the entire statute.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

Who pays the medical bills, the property damage, how the contingency fee settlement works, what the requirements of a settlement are, and jhow long it usually takes.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Everything about the accident, including police report number and insurance information if they have it.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I have done nothing other than personal injury work since I was in law school in 1993. So for 30 years I have done nothing other than help injured people. Most lawyers get burnt out after a while, but I wake up and love my job every single day.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Hearing about how the money I get my clients changes their life sometimes.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I like to bicycle around the lakes and trails on a regular basis and spend time with my sons.

Are you involved in your community?

Yes, we regularly do community service and fund raisers. I also spend a considerable amount of time cleaning up the community from trash and graffiti.
