Arthur (Art) A. Garton handles all matters of complex criminal law, family law, personal injury and business/civil litigation. He is one of two Macomb County attorneys who completed the National Criminal Defense College Trial Practice Institute. He regularly attends the Defense of Drunk Driving Seminars sponsored by the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. He received his B.A. from the American International College in 1974 and his M.A. from Central Michigan University in 1978. Ben Hall has dedicated his life to service—first to his country, then to his community, and now to his clients. He served five years in the United States Marine Corps, including a combat tour in Iraq. Remarkably, while working full-time as a police officer, Ben pursued his law degree, distinguishing himself through internships with the Michigan House of Representatives, the Governor’s Office, a state circuit court judge, and two federal judges on the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. After graduating cum laude from Michigan State University College of Law in 2019, Ben joined the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office. There, he prosecuted cases ranging from misdemeanors to multimillion-dollar fraud and complex criminal sexual conduct matters. This experience sharpened his ability to analyze cases from the inside and identify weaknesses in the state’s arguments. When Ben entered private practice, he immediately put this background to work for his clients. By leveraging his unique perspective as both a former prosecutor and nearly a decade as a police officer, he has secured favorable results—including multiple dismissals—for clients who once faced years of incarceration or lifelong criminal records. In recognition of his impact, he was named one of CNN’s Extraordinary People of 2014. Outside the courtroom, Ben is deeply committed to his family and community. He volunteers as a coach for his son’s football team and actively supports programs such as 4H, youth sports, and Odyssey of the Mind. He also officiates high school and college football and basketball, and in his “spare time” is training toward his private pilot’s license. Ben holds a bachelor’s degree from Park University (2007), a master’s degree from Central Michigan University (2015), and a Juris Doctor, cum laude, from Michigan State University College of Law (2019). He is admitted to practice law in all courts in the State of Michigan and the eastern and western federal district courts.

Wesley Todd originally joined the firm as an intern in 2008. He has been a shareholder of the firm since 2020. He was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan and graduated from Albion College in 2006 with a major in political science. While at Albion, he was an active member of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, national service fraternity, Habitat for Humanity and the Varsity Tennis Team. Wesley was awarded a Merit Scholarship to attend Michigan State University College of Law and earned his Juris Doctorate cum laude in 2010. After earning his Juris Doctorate, he established his private solo law practice in his hometown of Kalamazoo from 2011 to 2014. After this period Wesley joined Vandervoort Christ and Fisher, practicing there for over six years. Subsequently Wesley re-joined the firm in 2020. Wesley primarily specializes in Criminal and Family Law, as well as civil litigation. He has experience in a plethora of areas from divorce and custody hearings to criminal matters and Bankruptcy. He has presented cases in all counties of West Michigan. He is admitted to practice in the State of Michigan and in the Federal District Court for the Western District of Michigan. Wesley participates in activities with All Species Kinship and is a vintage car and sports enthusiast. Wesley is a member of the Kalamazoo County Bar Association and Calhoun County Bar Association (President 2019-2020). Tessa K. Muir is an accomplished trial attorney as a former federal prosecutor and former Army JAG officer. As an Assistant US Attorney in the Western District of Michigan, Tessa served as the lead prosecutor in hundreds of federal criminal cases and Sixth Circuit appeals. She worked closely with and trained federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies on search warrants, computer investigations, and human trafficking — including the Michigan State Police, FBI, DEA, ATF, Homeland Security, police departments, and sheriff’s offices throughout Michigan. Now, she uses that knowledge to understand weaknesses in an investigation and areas where law enforcement and investigators made critical errors. From the first stages of an investigation to the final stages of appeal, Tessa knows how the system works from the inside out. She uses her expertise as a former federal prosecutor to help her clients understand the investigative process, find weaknesses in the case, and build a strong defense. Tessa’s clients routinely comment that she is responsive, empathetic, professional, and effective. Tessa is a persuasive courtroom advocate and has won multiple not-guilty verdicts at trial. Tessa has convinced prosecutors at the state and federal levels to agree with her position on motions ranging from reversing improper sentencing conditions to excluding evidence against her clients at trial. Tessa succeeded in a motion to reverse a federal judge’s decision to deny bond to a client pending trial in a serious RICO conspiracy case. She achieved early release from a halfway house for a client suffering from a mental breakdown. She secured a sentence significantly below the recommended range in a federal healthcare fraud case, allowing her client to avoid serving prison time. These are just some examples of the results she has obtained for her clients. Tessa has earned commendations for her work as a federal trial attorney from the FBI, Homeland Security, and the State Bar of Michigan. Since 2015, she has been selected by fellow attorneys and federal judges in the Western District of Michigan as a Steering Committee member and instructor for the Hillman Trial Advocacy Program —the district’s premier federal trial practice program. Tessa founded and leads SBBL Law’s Title IX practice group and has become a national leader in the field. She represents students, staff, and faculty members who are either the victim (complainant) or the accused person (respondent) in Title IX sexual harassment and sexual assault cases at schools and colleges nationwide. She puts her background as a federal prosecutor and defense attorney to work to ensure the Title IX investigation process is as fair and thorough as possible for her clients. Her expertise and track record in this field are unrivaled, and she brings a deep understanding of Title IX laws and policies to fight for a fair and just outcome in every case. As a Title IX attorney, Tessa has successfully advocated for clients from five years old through college grad students and professors. She has won findings of “not responsible” for clients at Title IX hearings, obtained confidential settlements from schools that failed to follow the proper procedure, and advocated for supportive measures for clients who have experienced sexual assault and harassment. As a mom and step-mom, Tessa understands the unique dynamic of a family going through the difficult and overwhelming process of navigating the complex and overwhelming Title IX process. Dustin is an experienced IP practitioner with a vast array of technical experience. Dustin Zak is a registered patent attorney who focuses his practice on patent litigation and prosecution. Dustin possesses a vast range of technical experience ranging from chemical and material arts to software applications and artificial intelligence. Dustin has technical knowledge related to cyber security and computer technologies. During his studies, he has immersed himself in many technical topics including C++, Java, and visual basic programming, networking, open source networking, end-user computing, ethical hacking and offensive security, cyber intelligence, Linux security administration, information security, risk-vulnerability analysis, and digital forensics. Prior to joining Brooks Kushman, Dustin spent more than 5 years gaining technical experience as a Research and Development Chemist at an automotive OEM supplier and in the automotive after-market refinish industry. In these roles he formulated, developed, and launched various products globally. He also participated in the creation and development of technology for measuring visual emissions for compliance with EPA method 9, and validated and generated performance criteria for raw materials including solvents, polymers, resins, pigments, additives, and final products. Dustin holds a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University graduating at the top of his class where he received the Governor’s Scholarship. He was also the Senior Articles Editor for the Wayne Law Review and a Mock Trial member. Dustin also participated in the patent procurement clinic preparing patent applications for Detroit entrepreneurs and inventors. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Polymers and Coatings Technology from Eastern Michigan University, where he received the Recognition of Excellence Scholarship, the College of technology Coating Scholarship, and the Charles Parker Scholarship.
