Fluent in Spanish, she joined VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) to assist migrants and refugees. She studied at Oxford University, working in the Immigration Law Clinic. After graduating from the University of Maryland Law School in 1999, she began her career fighting for the rights of immigrants across the nation.
