Family Based Petitions

Practice Area: Immigration Outcome: Petition Granted Description: People are often intimidated by the immigration process. And while there is ample reason for this, it doesn't have to be as complex as it is perceived. However, because timing is an important factor in filing petitions, along with immigration intent, it is imperative that potential immigrants pay attention to the timeline of their process. One such example was a case involving an American married to a man from another country. While he came into the United States legally, he later decided to file for a permanent residency visa. But, in order to avoid the appearance of immigration fraud, we had to take precautions on when to file. I am happy to say that this client is now a permanent resident of the United States and is on his way to naturalization, if he chooses.

VAWA

Practice Area: Immigration Outcome: Petition Granted Description: Many citizens marry people from different countries with wrong intent. One such intent is to intimidate and abuse their spouse, be it a husband or a wife. One case that I handled involved a woman from another country who married an American. While no physical abuse was evident, psychological abuse was prevalent. I was able to assist this client in quickly obtaining work authorization, so that she could support herself, and eventually get her VAWA petition approved.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I helped an immigrant woman in an abusive marriage escape the marriage and gain resident status without needing to involve her spouse in the immigration proceedings. Normally, when an immigrant is married to an American citizen, the citizen is the one to apply for the immigration petition, but I was able to help this woman in spite of her marital situation and without any interference from her husband.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Someone who is both knowledgeable and personable. Immigrants are usually placing their trust (and future) in a stranger, so it is important that the immigrant is comfortable with his/her attorney.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I usually provide a free 30 minute consultation in which the contact gives me a summary of his/her case and I can give them advice based on that summary.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Helping immigrants reach their goal of having a brighter future in the United States. Native born Americans do not know how lucky we are that we do not have to go through this challenging process, in order to just get the opportunity to succeed in life and have the freedoms we have as US citizens.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

In my free time, I learn languages. I speak French and Spanish, and I am currently learning German and Turkish.

Are you involved in your community?

I am involved in the Briarwood International Outreach team at Briarwood Presbyterian Church. We help international students navigate through the city and help them be more at ease with being in a strange environment and different culture.
