Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

While I practice primarily in the area of family law, I was recently lead counsel in a significant medical malpractice jury trial. The defendant, doctor, was represented by one of the leading litigation firms in Canada. We were successful in winning the case and as a result, we obtained an excellent result for a very deserving client. Over the past few months, I have been able to settle three very difficult family law cases, which were on the cusp of going to Trial. I think it is fair to say that I obtained a very good result for my clients in each instance.

How did you build a successful practice?

I believe that over the past twenty-five years, I have built a successful practice for a number of reasons. I think the first and foremost reason is that I appreciate that, as a lawyer, I am in a service oriented industry. I pride myself on communication with my clients and with other lawyers. I am not the least bit apprehensive about litigating, but at the same time, I am adept at settlement negotiation. As a result I have had many clients over the years refer new clients to me for legal assistance.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

In my view, the most important thing that a client should look for in a lawyer is integrity. A lawyer should be clear and honest with respect to expectations, advice, etc. A lawyer must be both organized and well versed in legal matters. A lawyer's job is to help the client make informed choices and not simply to be a "yes man".
