About Deborah

Life happens - divorce, custody issues, bankruptcy, criminal allegations, insurance claims, injuries. You may be wanting to adopt, start a business or protect your assets through estate planning. During times like these, you need an attorney to help you navigate the legal system. Legal actions can place unbearable strain on real people. It is important that you have an attorney who can explain your options and keep you informed as your case develops.

Please describe a case(s) in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
While working as a paralegal, I interviewed a potential client who was seeking a divorce. She was originally from Africa and was now an American citizen, but still believed many of the antiquated beliefs of her homeland. Ultimately, she decided she did not file for divorce. After her husband beat her and gave her a sexually transmitted disease while she was pregnant, she came to a volunteer lawyer desk where I happened to be working. She still did not understand the American legal system and was not convinced that she had rights as a woman. As we went through the divorce process, I saw her become more confident and she embraced the opportunity to raise her daughters to believe that they were no "property," but were valuable humans who could make a difference in the world.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
During a free phone consultation, it is important for the client to provide the facts with as little emotion as possible. In certain cases, this is easier said than done. If the case has been filed already, provide the court, case number, and name of the other party to the attorney. Allow the attorney to ask you specific questions. Answer factually - not emotionally. The attorney can give explain how the law will apply to your situation, and provide you basic options for your circumstances. The attorney can also tell you what he or she will expect from you as a client, and what you should expect from them so that you can decide if you can work together.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
So many of people who are facing issues within the legal system are afraid, overwhelmed, and confused. In so many situations, the client can only see the immediate, rather than the long term outcome. It is so rewarding for me to help build people up during the legal process. Helping to educate my clients, giving them a voice, and watching them come out on the other side with a new strength and confidence is tremendously rewarding.
