Karl W Means, Attorney

Mr. Means is a shareholder in the Firm and chairs the  Intellectual Property Group.  His practice focuses on matters involving technology transfer and licensing, domestic and international trademarks and branding, software, Internet and e-commerce issues and copyright enforcement.  He also has experience with general corporate matters and business-related issues such as unfair competition, trade secrets and Web site use and privacy policies. He has conducted seminars on licensing, e-commerce, the protection of trade secrets, and copyright and the arts. 

Mr. Means serves as general counsel to the Montgomery County Students Information Technology and Automotive Trades Foundations, each a public-private trades educational program.  He is a member of the Board of Advisors for the Maryland Technology Development Center and the District of Columbia Bar Association Section on Entertainment, Sports and Media Law.

Before joining Shulman, Rogers, Gandal, Pordy and Ecker, Mr. Means was a Senior Attorney for Intellectual Property Rights at the United States Customs Service.  In that capacity, he served as the Chairman of the Customs Intellectual Property Enforcement Committee which administered service-wide the Customs Service Intellectual Property Anti-Counterfeiting and Enforcement Program.  He also served as a delegate to the World Customs Organization in Brussels, Belgium, and represented the Customs Service at bilateral and multilateral international trade negotiations.
