About Nancy
Nancy G. Carlin obtained a B.A. in English and Religion from Barnard College in New York, New York in 1975. She obtained her J.D. from King Hall, University of California, Davis in 1983, where she received an American Jurisprudence award in Contracts in 1981, and was a Law Review Editor. In addition, in 1982, her article entitled "Every Home Should Have One: The Betamax as a Staple Article of Commerce in Universal City Studios, Inc. v. Sony Corp. of America " was published in the U.C. Davis Law Review. See 16 U.C. Davis L. Rev. 209 (1982).
From September 1983 to December 1985, Ms. Carlin was an associate with the law firm of Sinsheimer, Schiebelhut & Baggett in San Luis Obispo, California. She handled labor and employment, bankruptcy, public agency, and general business matters. Ms. Carlin also taught "The Law and Managing Employees" an extension course at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in May 1985.
From December 1985 to January 1991, Ms. Carlin was a Labor Relations Attorney for Kmart Corporation at their Western Regional Office in Covina, California. In that position, she handled labor/employment, environmental and security-related legal matters covering 18 states and 100,000 employees. Ms. Carlin advised and counseled clients, and litigated before administrative agencies and in state and federal courts. She was responsible for cases from beginning to end, including trial, mediation, arbitration, discovery, and law and motion matters.
From January 1991 through May 1995, Ms. Carlin was a Litigation Attorney for the Trustees of the California State University in Long Beach, California. In that position, she was primarily responsible for litigation matters on behalf of the nation's largest public higher education system. She conducted litigation in state and federal courts in actions ranging from policy issues of first impression to liability matters with significant exposure. She advised and represented clients in wrongful termination, sexual harassment, and discrimination matters. Ms. Carlin also had experience in ex parte and provisional relief. She was responsible for cases from beginning to end, including trial, mediation, arbitration, discovery, law and motion matters, and administrative hearings.
Since June 1995 through the present, Ms. Carlin has been a partner in Carlin & Ceccia, located in Signal Hill, California. She represents employees in employment matters, including wrongful termination, discrimination, sexual harassment, sexual orientation harassment and discrimination, pregnancy discrimination and wage and hour matters. She is primarily responsible for cases from beginning to end, including trial, mediation, arbitration, discovery, law and motion matters, and administrative hearings. Ms. Carlin also reviews and negotiates severance agreements on behalf of employees. In addition, She wrote the "Sexual Harassment" chapter in California Causes of Action (James Publishing, 1998).
Ms. Carlin is a member of Women Lawyers of Long Beach, the Long Beach Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and the American Inns of Court (1999-2000). Beginning in July 1990 through the present, she has served as a settlement officer and arbitrator for the Los Angeles County Municipal and Superior Courts. She has served as a fee arbitrator for the Dispute Resolution Services for the Los Angeles County Bar Association since 1995 and as a mediator for the Los Angeles County Superior Court since 1999.
Ms. Carlin has served as a member of Lawyer Referral Service Committee of the Long Beach Bar Association since 1995, and as the Chairperson of the Committee in 2000 and 2001. In December 2000, Ms. Carlin was appointed to a three-year term as a member of the Personnel Commission for the Long Beach Community College District. In that capacity, she hears appeals of discipline and discharge for classified employees, sets classifications and compensation for classified positions, and supervises the Human Resources Director.
