He was named Legislator of the Year in 1995 by the South Carolina Department of Revenue. He was awarded Legislator of the Year by the South Carolina Trooper’s Association in 1997. In December, 2001, he received the Distinguished Service Award from “Save the Seed Ministry” of The Bennettsville Circuit 1 of the United Methodist Church. He has been active in the Democratic Party at the local and state level, and served as House Minority Leader from 2001-2003, as well as Chairman of the S. C.
