introduction
Early Experience
In 1984, Ed began practicing with a small, general practice law firm in Waterville, Maine. In early 1987, Ed joined the Cumberland County D.A.’s Office as an Assistant D.A. Within two months, he was invited to move from the Portland District Court to Cumberland County Superior Court, where he was soon racking up jury trials galore- sometimes 5 or 6 a month- handling cases ranging from misdemeanors, to sex offenses, to armed robberies, to attempted murders.
Cumberland County Deputy D.A.
In 1992, Ed was appointed to the position of Deputy Cumberland County District Attorney. The Deputy D.A. is sort of the “right hand” of the D.A., which is the role he assumed while also handling over 125 felonies and several hundred Superior Court misdemeanors per year.
Maine Criminal Defense Lawyer, OUI Defense
In 1995, Ed went into solo private practice, mostly practicing as a Maine Criminal Defense Lawyer in state and federal court. During this period, he defended people against a wide variety of criminal charges, including murder. The first murder charge he ever defended was dismissed outright by the State, after he tried the case twice without co-counsel, resulting in two hung juries.
From 1999 to 2012, Ed practiced in a prominent criminal defense/OUI defense firm in Saco, Maine, engaging exclusively in criminal defense with a strong focus on OUI defense. During this time, Ed represented hundreds of people who faced OUI charges as well as drug, sex and domestic violence charges, charges of vehicular and non-vehicular manslaughter, and attempted murder.
From 1996 to 2002, Ed served on the Board of Directors of the Maine Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. In 2013 he received that organization’s President’s Award, “For Exemplifying the Goals and Values of this Association and the Profession.” In 2011, Ed authored the book Maine OUI Law, a legal reference guide designed to assist other Maine attorneys handling OUI cases, now in its fourth edition. He also authored the legal reference guide, Maine Driver’s License Suspensions, Revocations and Related Offenses, first published in December of 2012 and now in its second edition. Ed served as an adjunct professor at the University of Maine School of Law, teaching the course Criminal Procedure: Investigations to second and third year law students in the spring semesters of 2014, 2015 and 2016. He has frequently lectured at continuing education seminars, training other criminal defense attorneys on the defense of clients charged with criminal and OUI offenses. In 2017 alone, Ed was invited to present at three training seminars for criminal defense attorneys on the topics of OUI defense, evidence issues in domestic violence cases, and state and federal firearms bans resulting from criminal convictions. If you hire another lawyer to represent you on a criminal charge in southern Maine, chances are Ed had something to do with that lawyer’s training. As for his own continuing education, Ed completed an 18-hour Intoxilizer 8000 Operator’s Course, in December of 2017, along with a couple dozen other Maine defense attorneys who focus on OUI defense. The course was graded and the participants were assigned a class rank. Ed was first in the class!
Since September of 2012, Ed has continued to engage exclusively in criminal and OUI defense from his office, in Biddeford, Maine. If you are charged with a crime he’s here, with roughly 36 years of criminal defense experience, to help you take it on and get through it.
