The firm was started by Chuck Merovitz in April 1976. In June 1978, Chuck invited Bram Potechin to join as a partner. Together, they have built the firm upon a foundation of exceptional legal advice and client service.

In 1996, after 20 years in practice, the firm began a calculated period of growth to meet the developing needs of its clients in Ottawa. In 1996, Robert De Toni was hired to help expand the litigation department and in 1997, Timothy Grieve joined the firm to lead its business law team. Both Rob and Tim became partners.

Since 1997, Merovitz Potechin LLP has been in a mode of controlled growth, adding legal professionals in five core areas:

- Disputes and litigation
- Insolvency and collections
- Real estate
- Business law
- Wills, trusts and estates
