Are IEPs Hard to Get?
Obtaining an Individualized Education Program (IEP) may be a difficult process, as many parents often do not know what an IEP is or what the development of an IEP involves. In addition, due to how expensive and involved it is to provide a student with special education services, schools may try to avoid IEPs by dragging out the IEP process or providing 504 plans in their place. The process starts with a referral, then an evaluation will be conducted to determine whether the child has a disability and to measure their academic and functional performance in school. The PPT will then meet to go over the results of this assessment and determine the child’s special education eligibility. To be eligible for special education and related services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a child must be between 3 and 21 years old and have at least one of the disabilities recognized by the IDEA. In addition, this disability must substantially impact their performance in school and be severe enough to require specialized education. This is an involved process, so being well-informed about your child’s needs and special education rights is essential when requesting an educational evaluation and pursuing an IEP.
