The parent(s) of a special education student are included as part of that student’s Planning and Placement Team (PPT), who is tasked with developing their Individualized Education Program (IEP). Parents have a legal right to participate in IEP meetings, which includes expressing any concerns they have regarding the plan. It is important to voice these objections, so they can be written into the IEP for further consideration. Parents may reject the IEP in its entirety, or only a portion of it which allows the other services to be implemented while their specific concerns are addressed. A formal rejection must be included in the IEP in writing, ensuring that it will not be implemented right away. If the disagreement cannot be settled among members of the PPT, parents can file a formal dispute through special education due process. This is a legal process that aims to resolve the disagreement and ensure that the student is provided with the special education services they require.
