An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a written document that outlines the specialized instruction and related services that a student with a disability requires, and is developed at an IEP meeting by a team of individuals. The IEP must be finalized before special education or related services can be provided, and the student's educational placement is determined based on the IEP. These meetings allow parents, teachers, and other key individuals to discuss the student's educational needs and collaborate on decisions regarding their program and services. According to IDEA, for students receiving special education and related services for the first time, the IEP meeting must be convened within 30 calendar days of determining that the student requires these services. Implementation of each student's IEP should commence promptly after the meeting, ideally immediately afterward.
