An IEP, or Individualized Education Program, is a legally binding document that schools are required to comply with. This means that school staff, including teachers, are legally obligated to uphold a student’s IEP and provide all of the services and accommodations it includes. If it is the case that your child’s teacher is ignoring their IEP, there are steps you can take to resolve this issue. First, you can meet with the teacher to go over the IEP, explain why it is in place, and remind them that they must comply with it. If this does not work, you can take your complaint up with school administrators and ask them to speak with your child’s teacher. After these two conversations, if nothing has been done, you can request an IEP meeting with your child’s Planning and Placement Team (PPT). It is important that you document all of these efforts, especially if you need to move forward with filing a formal complaint or hiring an attorney.
