Can You Fail With an IEP?

Although it is unlikely that a child with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) will fail a class, it is not impossible. The purpose of an IEP is to address student’s individual needs and help them improve their learning, but there is no guarantee that they will pass every assignment, test, and class. If a student with a disability is failing or otherwise struggling in their education, it is important that their IEP is revisited and revised to ensure they are receiving the proper services. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, each student must have access to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE). If a student is failing, their IEP may not be working which could interfere with their right to a FAPE.
