Summary: While many credit card companies sell their delinquent accounts to debt collections agencies, not every company provides sufficient documentation to the buyer. Without the proper paperwork, a debt collections company usually doesn’t have a leg to stand on in court.

"Collections lawsuits from credit card companies are very common, with some of the larger corporations filing thousands of them each year. Many of these companies also sell their delinquent accounts in volume to debt collections agencies, but they may give little to no history or paperwork for the accounts along with them—and in many cases, they are not cooperative about doing so later as everything is sold on an ‘as is’ basis."
