With the advancement of medical technology, doctors are making newer and more frequent diagnoses of medical conditions. One of these formerly rare conditions that are now being more frequently diagnosed is the Chiari Malformation. A Chiari Malformation is a condition in which brain tissue extends into your spinal cord canal, occurring when part of your skull is abnormal or misshapen, thus pressing on your brain and pressuring your brain downward.

TYPES OF CHIARI MALFORMATIONS

There are three types of Chiari Malformations: type I, type II, and type III. Types I and II are much more common than type III.

·        Type I: Develops as the brain and skull are growing, thus it may go unrecognized until late childhood or adulthood.

·        Type II: The most common pediatric form Chiari Malformations, it is congenital, meaning it is present from birth. This occurs when a larger amount of brain tissue protrudes into the spinal canal.

·        Type III: This is the most severe type Chiari Malformation and results in the most fatalities and of severe neurological conditions. This is diagnosed when the lower part of the brain or the brain stem protrudes into the spinal canal. This is often diagnosed either at birth or during pregnancy.

RECOGNIZINING IF YOU ARE EXPIERENCING CHIARI MALFORMATION SYPMTOMS

Often times, Type I Chiari Malformations are only discovered as a result other medical tests being performed on a patient. They experience no symptoms and need no treatment, and go on with their lives. However, in instances of head trauma, either severe or mild, a person’s Chiari Malformation symptoms can be activated, or awakened, and cause pain and other potential health risks for the individual.

If you are suffering from the following symptoms after an accident where you experienced head trauma, no matter how severs, you may have just activated a Type I Chiari Malformation: neck pain, trouble with balance, poor hand eye coordination, numbness or tingling of the hands and feet, dizziness, difficulty swallowing, vision problems, or a hoarse voice.
