Local and regional boards of education require each school in a given district to identify a crisis intervention team. Crisis intervention teams are composed of teachers, administrators, and paraprofessionals who are in direct contact with students and are trained in conducting restraint and seclusion. These teams are responsible for responding to incidents that may require the use of restraint or seclusion in order to prevent harm to the student or others. Training must be updated on a yearly basis as determined by the school district’s program, and must include:

  • An overview of the applicable laws and regulations concerning the use of physical restraint and seclusion with students.

  • Strategies for de-escalation and methods to prevent the necessity of restraint and seclusion.

  • Guidelines for appropriately physically restraining or secluding a student, including: the types of physical restraint and seclusion, the different levels of physical restraint and seclusion, the difference between physical restraint and pain compliance techniques, and monitoring methods for restrained or secluded students.
