Police suspect that drugs and alcohol played a significant part in the death of a Wisconsin man on the night of Nov. 20. Early reports suggest that the victim and three of his friends sought out another man because they were itching for a fight that never happened. The disagreement reportedly turned into road rage that resulted in a fatal accident.

The victim and his friends got into a vehicle and drove away from the man they were antagonizing. That man apparently then got into a vehicle and followed, slamming into the side of the vehicle when he caught up to the group. The 19-year-old driver was not able to maintain control of the vehicle and spun into a guardrail.

The victim was thrown from the vehicle during the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene. Other than a 16-year-old teen that suffered mild head trauma in the accident, no other injuries were reported. The driver deemed responsible for the tragedy did not remain at the scene after the collision.

Police arrested him later at his home. He is said to have attempted to cover up his involvement in the crash by removing paint from his own vehicle that police say came from the victim’s vehicle. Formal charges were pending further investigation, but he was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run and vehicular homicide. His bail was set at $5,000.

The tragic part of this fatal accident is that it need never have happened. If one or both parties had let reason override the emotions of that night, the victim may be alive today. Instead, one man is dead, and the other is facing prison time and a potential wrongful death claim from the deceased Wisconsin man’s family.
