An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is designed to help special education students achieve a level of academic success that is comparable to that of the general education students in their grade. The learning goals in a student’s IEP should reflect state standards, in other words, what students are expected to learn in each subject during the school year. This helps ensure that special education students are being taught the same content as general education students, and are equally as prepared as their peers for life beyond high school graduation. Special education services and accommodations give students the opportunity to receive a grade-level education and reach the same standards as their classmates.
