Exclusionary Time Out Guidelines
Local and regional boards of education must establish policies regarding the use of exclusionary time outs in their schools. The following are requirements of these policies:
-
Exclusionary time outs are not used as a form of discipline.
-
At least one member of school staff stays with or is available to the student for communication during the time out.
-
The setting used for the exclusionary time out is clean, safe, and appropriate for calming the student and de-escalating their behavior.
-
The exclusionary time out will end as soon as possible.
-
If the student requires special education or is being evaluated for special education, and the interventions are not property addressing the student’s misbehavior, the PPT will meet as soon as possible to develop alternate strategies.
