Summary: FILMS FOLLOWING MUSIC IN COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT
With the advent of MP3, copyright infringement of music ran rampant – especially with Grockster and Napster platforms. The U.S. Supreme Court found infringement though one did not control the server and the other may have had some non-infringing benefits. Certain record companies and others filed countless lawsuits to send the message — and fear — deep and wide.
With the advent of Streaming Video on Demand, and other old-school illegal recording methods, the film industry is starting to fight back. Why? Because these illegal copies can have a dramatic financial impact on foreign film distribution. These foreign film fees are typically used to pay back the initial money lenders to create the film. As a result, Voltage Pictures has filed some 1200 lawsuits worldwide for copyright infringement of their films.
The statutory damages for violation of a federal copyright are extensive and include the right to recoup all attorney fees and costs.
