This December Ford Motor Company will be recalling approximately 1.5 million Focus compact cars in North America due to a fuel system malfunction.
While the company says it’s not prevalent to any injuries or crashes being reported as a result of this issue, all 2-liter four-cylinder engines in cars from 2012 through 2018 are at risk. Ford says owners need to keep their gas tanks at least half full as the problem is causing engines to stall intermittently.
In some cases, product recalls involving either a manufacturing defect or design defect can pose a significant personal safety risk to consumers. According to Attorney James Graver of the Law Offices of James G. Graver, P.A., manufacturers of products that are placed into the stream of commerce and that are utilized by members of the general public spend millions of dollars attempting to notify users regarding recalls of their product.
“From a life-safety standpoint, it is crucial that all product recall requests be acknowledged and taken seriously,” says Attorney Graver. “Unfortunately, not all consumers utilizing products that are the subject of a recall receive notice despite manufacturer’s efforts.”
Fords’ recall is said to commence on December 10th and will involve having their dealerships reprogram the car’s computer with new software that will detect a stuck valve as a possible remedy to the problem. Ford dealers will also replace various parts such as the canister purge valve, if needed.
“Consumers that do not receive notice of a particular recall are not necessarily prevented from making a claim for injuries sustained as a result of the defect that is the subject of the recall,” according to Mr. Graver.
