Is School Mandatory in Connecticut?
Under Conn. Gen. Stat. § 10-184, children aged 5 through 17 are required to attend public school regularly in the district in which they reside according to the hours and terms it is in session. It is the responsibility of the parent(s) to ensure that their child is regularly attending school. There are exceptions to this requirement, for instance, if a child attends private school or is homeschooled. If a child is enrolled in a private school, their parents must still comply with the attendance policy provided by that school. If a child is homeschooled, their instruction must include reading, writing, spelling, English grammar, geography, arithmetic, United States history and citizenship, and study of the town, state, and federal governments. This home education must also meet the learning standards set forth by public and private institutions.
