Many people have not been "trained" for a divorce, do not know how a divorce works but only read about them in the gossip pages or through there friends you have either been divorced or heard about it. The reason I say this as a divorce lawyer is that no question is stupid because before I was a lawyer, I was a person without a law degree and was just as confused as any person who seeks an attorney. One question that comes up a lot is if a person who seeks a divorce cannot find their spouse, can they still get a divorce? The other question is, I live in New Jersey, my spouse lives in another state, can I file here?

With regard to completing a divorce without knowing where your spouse is, the answer is yes, you can. It is called a divorce by publication and while it is more work and more costly than your "normal" uncontested divorce, it is still very much possible. My team and I have never been denied a divorce by publication. We know how the process works and can handle it for you.

The last question is also a yes. Even if your spouse does not live in New Jersey but you satisfy the jurisdiction and venue requirements, you can file and get a divorce here. If your spouse has a valid reason to file elsewhere (the children are there, or a Judge finds a reason to file elsewhere), then that is a different scenario.
