Parent Participation in PPT Meetings

Parents must have the opportunity to participate in their child’s Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings. These meetings should be scheduled in a time and place that works for all parties and, as a parent, you can ask the school district to reschedule or join the meeting another way (such as a conference call) if you cannot attend. At least five school days before it takes place, the school district must send a written notification to the parents about the meeting to give them the chance to attend. If the school district has repeatedly tried to include you and you still do not attend, they may hold the PPT meeting without you. The notice of the PPT meeting must include:

• the purpose, date, time, and location of the meeting;

• who will be attending the meeting;

• information on your right to bring individuals to the meeting who know and can provide support for your child; and

• an invitation for your child to attend the meeting if appropriate.

School districts are required to hold PPT meetings once a year, however, parents have the right to request PPT meetings at any time to address or revise their child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
