Parental Rights in PPT Meetings

Planning and Placement Teams (PPTs) are tasked with reviewing special education referrals, deciding whether a child needs to be evaluated and which evaluations will be given to them, and determining special education eligibility. The parents of special education students are very important members of the PPT, and they are entitled to the following rights:

Having an understanding of meeting proceedings: this is provided by the school district and may involve arranging for a language interpreter as needed

Getting to participate in the meeting: facilitated by the school district, may include individual or conference phone calls if you cannot attend

Recording meetings to aid in comprehension: meeting participants must be informed of this before the meeting takes place

Inviting advocates to the meeting at your own expense: advocates can participate in developing, reviewing, and revising your child’s IEP
