• Have dignity: Treat people with respect and understand that everybody has value.

• Make child-centered decision-making: Prioritize the child’s needs and keep the child in mind when making decisions.

• Empower parents: Ensure parents of special education students are heard, understood, fully informed, and are able to participate in a meaningful way.

• Practice collaboration: Be open, helpful, and understanding to others when facing conflict. Listening and asking questions is key to solving problems and coming up with solutions. 

• Build and strengthen relationships: Encourage meaningful communication and collaboration to solve problems and empower team members.

• Maintain professionalism: Follow through, respond in a timely manner, and maintain a good line of communication.

• Utilize the community: Connect with local agencies and parents to exchange knowledge and create a good support system.

• Have integrity: Be honest and establish trust with others.

• Be competent: Make sure you are open, prepared, and informed regarding special education in your jurisdiction.

• Maintain privacy: Protect student information and make an effort to keep private information confidential.
