Restraint and Seclusion: When to Conduct a Meeting for General Education Students

For general education students in grades K-12 who have been restrained or secluded four or more times within 20 school days, a meeting must be held. The individuals who will be present at the meeting include:

a school administrator;
-
at least one of the student’s teachers;

the student’s parent or guardian;
-
if necessary, mental health professionals who may help: conduct or revise a behavioral assessment, create or revise a behavioral intervention plan (BIP), and determine if the student requires special education services.
The number of times that restraint or seclusion is used for the student should be reviewed by the school monthly to make sure an appropriate meeting is held after the fourth incident within a 20-day period.
