Seclusion vs. Exclusionary Time Out

Seclusion is the act of confining a person in a room, physically preventing them from leaving. Seclusion does not include any confinement of a person at risk where they are physically capable of leaving the area, such as in-school suspension and timeouts. An exclusionary time out is when a student is separated from an activity in a free setting to help calm them and de-escalate their behavior. Exclusionary time outs are temporary and monitored, and are considered different from “seclusion” unless the student is physically or otherwise prevented from leaving the area.
