Most small business owners will visit their physicians for periodic checkups.  It is equally important to consider a labor law compliance “check-up” through an attorney or human resources specialist.  California law can be tricky and unique.  Even with the best of intentions, businesses can find themselves with disgruntled employees filing claims with the Division of Labor Standards Enforcement.  (I ask, as an aside, where are all the “gruntled” employees?) The friendly folks at DLSE will answer questions, help claimants with the forms, and then send out a notice of a complaint.  Often, minor and inexpensive changes in business practices can head off these claims or reduce the likelihood of success if they are made.
