Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), school districts must conduct an evaluation that:
-
Utilizes a variety of procedures, tools, and strategies to collect important functional, developmental, and academic information, which may include input from parents.
-
Assesses the child across all suspected areas of disability, such as health, vision, hearing, social and emotional functioning, overall intelligence, academic performance, communication abilities, and motor skills, as appropriate.
-
Evaluates the child in their primary language (e.g., Spanish) or through alternative forms of communication (e.g., sign language for deaf children), unless it is clearly impractical to do so.
-
Ensures the evaluation process is fair and unbiased, regardless of the child's disability status or cultural background.
-
Employs evaluation tools and methods that provide pertinent information crucial for determining the child's educational needs, and that assess the impact of cognitive, behavioral, physical, and developmental factors contributing to any difficulties the child may be experiencing.
