Mediation
Public Act 23-127 mandates that the CSDE appoint a "mediation services coordinator" within its Bureau of Special Education. This coordinator's responsibilities include overseeing and organizing special education mediation services statewide, as well as maintaining a roster of qualified special education mediators who meet specified training standards. The Act outlines requirements for mediator training and ongoing education, granting the CSDE authority to exempt individuals with sufficient experience or training from these requirements and to retain previous mediators. Additionally, the Mediation Services Coordinator serves as the primary contact for mediation requests from any involved party. While any party can request mediation, participation remains voluntary, requiring agreement from all parties involved.
