Summary: Each year thousands of people are seriously injured or die from surgical mistakes in doctors offices and hospitals.

There are probably few things people fear more than having surgery.  Most people naturally have anxiety when it comes to an operation, but nobody wants to contemplate that a surgery error could occur causing them a serious injury or death.  But surgical mistakes do happen despite requirements that hospitals abide by procedures to prevent common mistakes from happening, including operating on the wrong side of the body, removing the wrong appendage, accidentally perforating a vital organ causing an infection, and anesthesia errors which can cause severe brain injuries to the patients.

Most people incorrectly believe that only serious operations such as those done in emergency situations cause severe injuries to patients or that experienced surgeons do not make mistakes.  Unfortunately this is not true.  Thousands of people are seriously injured or die each year from non-emergency surgeries, including elective surgery such as plastic surgery or weight loss surgery, and experienced surgeons as well as inexperienced surgeons make mistakes.  All surgery, even elective surgery carries a risk of injury from a surgical error.

Surgery malpractice happens frequently in hospitals. A surgical mistake can happen for a variety of reasons including a shortage of medical staff, when medical staff fails to properly communicate with each other, if the surgeon is overworked, stressed, or tired, or if the surgeon simply makes a technical mistake.  In the case of a shortage of medical staff, including in the emergency department, a patient who is in serious need of an operation may have to wait for an available surgeon who is in the middle of another operation or outside the facility, thereby causing the medical condition to escalate to something far worse.

Surgery malpractice also frequently occurs at doctors offices and surgery centers where patients may be in even more danger if a medical emergency arises.  For example, if a patient experiences problems with the anesthesia and needs emergency medical help, the doctor may not have access to a trained medical staff and resources crucial to helping the patient survive.  The patient may be kept waiting for many agonizing minutes for an ambulance to arrive to transport him or her to a hospital.  During that time, the patients medical condition may dramatically worsen, resulting in severe brain injuries or death.
