Summary: This past July, four new lawsuits were filed against the crossbow manufacturer, making a total of 15 pending lawsuits, alleging that their crossbow models were responsible for severing off their thumbs.

With the widespread popularity of movies and TV shows like The Hunger Games and The Walking Dead, more and more people are developing an interest in shooting crossbows. With little to no experience, these new crossbow-curious people are going out and purchasing crossbows for recreational shooting. There is no regulation of crossbow safety, making warning labels uncommon on lower-end models that beginners usually purchase. Retailers are also not responsible for giving instruction to firsthand shooters, leaving the new and inexperienced crossbowmen to wing it.

Most new crossbow shooters will hold the bow like a rifle, with their hands high on the bow. This mistake has proven costly for consumers who purchased a crossbow from the Tarpon Springs-based manufacturer, Barnett Outdoors. This past July, four new lawsuits were filed against the crossbow manufacturer, making a total of 15 pending lawsuits, alleging that their crossbow models were responsible for severing off their thumbs.

William Meredith, of McKinney, Texas, was shooting his friend’s Barnett Outdoors crossbow in his backyard when the bow’s string cut a half inch off of the top part of his thumb. “It was like cutting through warm butter,” said Meredith in regards to the loosing of his thumb. While Meredith was new to crossbows, the defective crossbow has also caused crossbow shooting veterans their thumbs as well. Kevin Lilly, a resident of Georgia, had 20 years of experience under his belt when he had his thumb shattered by a Barnett Outdoors crossbow. Lilly’s thumb injury fused his thumb together, severely limiting his range of motion with that hand. This had a profound effect on his ability to run the roofing business he owned.

The Burnett Outdoors crossbow model “Jackal” has been cited the most in the lawsuits, however, other models manufactured by Burnett Outdoors have been cited as causing damage as well. Thumb guards are not required on crossbows, even though some higher-end models will include safety devices on their bows, and experienced shooters will even make their own versions of a thumb guard.
